I shoot the most photographed coast on earth from a bicycle.

My parents gave me a Kodak and a week in the Texas Panhandle, which is mostly sky and not much else. I have been pointing a camera at the horizon ever since. The Kodak is a Nikon Z9 now, a 24-70 on the front, but the horizon has not changed. Thirty years and four continents later, the coast is what holds my attention.

Most of the California shoreline gets photographed from a parking lot. I ride it instead, the way other people commute it, and the camera comes along because the best light shows up where the ride does. The frames worth keeping happen in the last twenty minutes of the day, when the towers go black against the sky and everyone else has headed in for dinner.

There is a sunset every night and nobody owns it. What sits here is narrower than that. A specific evening, on a specific beach, that took a bike to reach. Newport. Corona del Mar. The towers at Huntington.
